Context

Paul wrote this letter to Titus, a young pastor left in Crete to appoint elders and oversee the churches there. In chapter 2, Paul gives instructions for various groups within the church—older men, older women, young women, and young men. In verse 7, he directly addresses Titus, urging him to be an example in all things.

Meaning

The verse has two main parts: being a pattern of good works, and in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, and sincerity. The Greek word rendered “pattern” is tupon (type), meaning a model or example. Paul urges Titus to exemplify good works in every aspect of his life—behavior, speech, and actions—so that others could look to him as a role model. It was not enough for Titus to deliver sound doctrine and exhort different groups; he was to be a pattern of every good work through his whole manner of life.

The second part concerns doctrine, which refers to teaching. “Uncorruptness” means purity and integrity, free from error, heresy, and human invention. “Gravity” refers to seriousness and dignity of speech and countenance, without levity in expression. “Sincerity” means integrity and uprightness of soul, giving forth the sincere milk of the word. Some commentators see this second clause as referring to the manner of teaching—that it should be delivered purely and with gravity—while others see it as referring to the teacher’s life and conversation as answering to his doctrine and going along with it.
