Philemon 1:22

Listen to this article

“But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.”

Philemon is one of the shorter books in the New Testament, consisting of only one chapter. It is a personal letter written by the Apostle Paul to Philemon, a Christian slave owner, regarding his slave Onesimus who had run away but had since become a Christian.

In Philemon 1:22, Paul is making a request to Philemon. Let’s break down the verse to better understand its meaning:

“But withal prepare me also a lodging”:Paul is expressing his desire to visit Philemon. He asks Philemon to prepare a place for him to stay, indicating his intention to visit him personally. This request shows Paul’s expectation to be welcomed by Philemon, suggesting a close relationship between them.

“For I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you”:Paul expresses his confidence that, through the prayers of Philemon and possibly others, he will be released or granted freedom to come to him. It implies that Paul may have been imprisoned or faced some other hindrance that prevented him from visiting Philemon at that time.

This verse reveals Paul’s hope to visit Philemon and possibly address the matter concerning Onesimus, the runaway slave. It highlights Paul’s trust in the power of prayer and the expectation that God will answer the prayers of the faithful. Additionally, it portrays the bond and mutual trust between Paul and Philemon, which likely stems from their shared Christian faith.

Overall, Philemon 1:22 provides insight into Paul’s personal relationship with Philemon, his confidence in the power of prayer, and his anticipation of being reunited with Philemon through the grace of God.
