Philemon 1:25

Listen to this article

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.” Context:

Philemon 1:25 is the concluding verse of the book of Philemon in the King James Version of the Bible. Here is the verse in its entirety:

This verse serves as a closing benediction or a final blessing in Paul’s letter to Philemon. Though it consists of only a single sentence, it contains important theological and spiritual implications.

  • The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ:Grace is a central theme in the Christian faith. It refers to the unmerited favour, love, and mercy of God extended to humanity through Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul often emphasised the significance of God’s grace, highlighting that it is by grace that we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9). The grace of Jesus Christ represents His redemptive work on the cross and the forgiveness of sins available to all who believe in Him.
  • Be with your spirit:Paul prays that the grace of Jesus Christ may be with Philemon’s spirit. The spirit here refers to the innermost part of a person, the essence of their being. This implies that the grace of Christ is not merely an external force but a transformative power that affects the core of one’s being. It encompasses a personal and intimate experience of God’s presence and influence in our lives.
  • Amen:The word “Amen” is an affirmation, expressing agreement, certainty, and faith. It is often used to conclude prayers or statements of truth in the Bible. By including “Amen” at the end of his letter, Paul reinforces the truth and significance of the preceding words. It serves as a seal of confirmation and a declaration of trust in God’s faithfulness.
