Hebrews 1:14
“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”
Context:The book of Hebrews was written to a Jewish Christian audience to emphasise the superiority of Christ and the new covenant over the old covenant. In the preceding verses, the author establishes the supremacy of Christ over angels, stating that God appointed Him as the heir of all things and that the angels worship Him (Hebrews 1:2-6). Hebrews 1:14 continues this line of thought, highlighting the role of angels as ministering spirits.
Ministering spirits:Angels are described as “ministering spirits” in this verse. The term “ministering” implies that angels serve a purpose and carry out specific tasks. They are heavenly beings created by God, and they fulfil His purposes in various ways throughout Scripture. Angels can be seen as messengers, protectors, and agents of God’s divine intervention.
Purpose of angels:According to Hebrews 1:14, angels are sent forth by God to minister to “them who shall be heirs of salvation.” This statement suggests that angels have a specific role in caring for and assisting those who are recipients of salvation. While the verse does not explicitly elaborate on the nature of their ministry, it implies that angels play a role in God’s divine plan for the salvation and well‑being of believers.
Assistance for believers:The reference to “them who shall be heirs of salvation” indicates that the ministry of angels is directed towards believers, specifically those who have received salvation through faith in Christ. Angels are sent to help, support, and protect those who are part of God’s family. They are actively involved in fulfilling God’s purposes on behalf of His people.
Importance of angels:This verse reminds believers of the existence and activity of angels in the spiritual realm. While they are not to be worshipped or exalted above God, the author of Hebrews acknowledges the role of angels as important servants of God who carry out His will. Understanding the ministry of angels can provide comfort and assurance to believers, knowing that God has appointed these celestial beings to aid and assist them.
