Hebrews 1:13

But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

Hebrews 1:13 (KJV)

The Book of Hebrews is a New Testament epistle written by an unknown author to a Jewish Christian audience. The author emphasizes the superiority of Christ over all other figures, including angels, and encourages the readers to remain faithful to their Christian faith despite persecution.

This verse is a rhetorical question that concludes the author’s opening argument for the superiority of Christ over angels. The implied answer is “none“: God the Father never addressed such a word to any angel. The verse is a direct quotation of Psalm 110:1, a Davidic psalm widely recognized in the New Testament as messianic. By applying it to the Son, the author shows that Jesus occupies a position of unique honor and authority at the Father’s right hand, a status never granted to angels.

The imagery of sitting at the right hand signifies a place of highest honor, authority, and power. The promise that enemies will be made a footstool indicates certain, future victory and subjugation of all opposition. In the ancient world, a conqueror would place his foot on the neck of a defeated enemy, symbolizing complete victory and subjugation. The verse implies that God will eventually subject all of Christ’s enemies under His feet, signifying the final and complete victory of Christ over all opposing forces.

The theme of Christ’s session at the right hand of God is echoed later in Hebrews 10:13, where Christ is described as “expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.” This connection shows that the session of Christ at the right hand of God is a present reality with a future consummation.

This verse reinforces the message of the Book of Hebrews that Jesus Christ is the ultimate fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies and the supreme authority in the universe. It encourages believers to place their trust in Christ alone, recognising His superiority over all powers and principalities. It also serves as a reminder that, regardless of the challenges and persecutions faced, Christ’s ultimate victory is assured, and His enemies will be defeated.

Overall, Hebrews 1:13 highlights the incomparable position of Jesus Christ, establishes His superiority over angels, and points to His future triumph over His enemies. It encourages believers to trust in Christ’s authority and remain steadfast in their faith.
