Hebrews is a profound and majestic epistle that sets forth the absolute superiority of Jesus Christ and the perfection of the salvation found in Him. Written to encourage believers who were under pressure and temptation to draw back, the letter exalts Christ above all that came before and calls the people of God to persevere in faith, worship, and obedience.
From the opening chapter, Hebrews presents the Son as the final and fullest revelation of God, greater than the prophets and far above the angels. He is the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His person. This emphasis on Christ’s supremacy continues throughout the book and forms the foundation of every warning and encouragement given in the letter.
A major theme of Hebrews is the priesthood of Christ. Jesus is shown to be the great High Priest who has passed into the heavens, compassionate toward His people yet entirely without sin. Unlike the priests under the old covenant, He offered not repeated animal sacrifices but Himself, once for all, securing eternal redemption for His people.
The epistle also contrasts the old covenant with the new covenant established by Christ. The earthly tabernacle, sacrifices, and ceremonial system are shown to be shadows pointing forward to the better reality found in Him. In Christ there is a better covenant, better promises, a better sanctuary, and a better sacrifice. Hebrews contains strong warnings against unbelief and falling away, urging believers to give earnest heed, to enter into God’s rest, and to hold fast their confidence. At the same time, it offers some of Scripture’s greatest encouragements, especially in the call to come boldly unto the throne of grace and in the great chapter on faith, where many Old Testament saints are set forth as examples of steadfast trust in God.
The closing chapters turn to endurance, holiness, worship, brotherly love, and perseverance. Believers are called to run with patience the race set before them, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of faith. Overall, Hebrews is a book of Christ’s supremacy, His perfect priesthood and sacrifice, the better covenant, persevering faith, and the heavenly hope set before the people of God.
