Hebrews 9:23

“It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.”

Context:The Book of Hebrews was written to a group of Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and struggling with their faith. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice compared to the Old Testament system of worship. Hebrews 9 discusses the earthly and heavenly aspects of the tabernacle and the high priest’s role in offering sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins.

Comparison of patterns and realities:The verse mentions the “patterns of things in the heavens.” In the Old Testament, the tabernacle and its rituals served as earthly representations or patterns of heavenly things. These earthly rituals, such as the animal sacrifices performed by the high priest, were necessary for purification. However, the verse goes on to state that the heavenly things themselves required better sacrifices than those performed in the earthly tabernacle.

Superiority of Christ’s sacrifice:The key message in this verse is the superiority of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice over the sacrificial system of the Old Testament. The sacrifices offered in the tabernacle were temporary and had to be repeated regularly, as they could not permanently remove sin. The verse implies that the heavenly things, which include our eternal salvation and access to God’s presence, required a better sacrifice. This better sacrifice refers to Jesus Christ’s atoning death on the cross, which was a once-for-all sacrifice, capable of fully purifying and forgiving sins for all who believe in Him.

Fulfillment of the Old Testament:Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus is the fulfilment of the Old Testament prophecies and types. The sacrificial system and the rituals in the tabernacle pointed forward to Christ’s sacrifice, which would be the ultimate and final sacrifice for sin. Jesus’ death and resurrection inaugurated the new covenant, replacing the old covenant of the Mosaic Law.

Application:Hebrews 9:23 reminds believers of the unique and powerful sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It teaches us that our salvation and access to God are not based on our own efforts or religious rituals but solely on the finished work of Christ. We no longer need to rely on the temporary and inadequate sacrifices of the Old Testament, as Christ’s sacrifice has accomplished our redemption once and for all. This verse encourages us to place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ as the only means of salvation and to live in the light of His sacrifice.

Remember to study the entire chapter of Hebrews 9 to gain a comprehensive understanding of the context and the broader message of the passage.
