Hebrews 10:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to a community of Jewish believers who were facing persecution and tempted to abandon their faith in Jesus Christ. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Christ and the New Covenant over the Old Covenant and the sacrifices prescribed by the Mosaic Law.

Comparison of Sacrifices:In Hebrews 10:8, the author is quoting from Psalm 40:6-8 to highlight the inadequacy of the Old Testament sacrificial system. The verse emphasizes that God did not desire or take pleasure in the various offerings and sacrifices prescribed by the law.

God’s Desire for Obedience:The verse reveals that God’s primary desire is not merely the outward rituals and sacrifices but true obedience and submission to His will. The Old Covenant sacrifices were meant to be a temporary provision until the coming of the perfect sacrifice‑Jesus Christ.

The Will of God:Hebrews 10:9 continues with the statement, “Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God.” Here, the author contrasts the temporary and imperfect sacrifices of the Old Covenant with the ultimate fulfillment of God’s will found in Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ as the Perfect Sacrifice:The verse points to the purpose of Jesus’ incarnation‑to do the will of God perfectly. Jesus came to fulfill the righteous requirements of the law and offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Through His sacrifice, Jesus brought an end to the need for repeated animal sacrifices.

The New Covenant:Hebrews presents Jesus as the mediator of a new and better covenant. Through His sacrifice, He provides forgiveness of sins, access to God, and the promise of eternal life. The author of Hebrews encourages the believers to place their faith in Jesus and rely on His sacrifice rather than the temporary sacrifices of the Old Covenant.

Overall, Hebrews 10:8 highlights the insufficiency of the Old Covenant sacrifices and emphasizes the superiority of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice as the ultimate fulfilment of God’s will. It encourages believers to place their faith in Christ and the New Covenant established through Him.
