Hebrews 10:30

For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

Hebrews 10:30 (KJV)

The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians facing persecution and tempted to return to Judaism. The author urges them to remain firm in faith in Jesus Christ, emphasizing His superiority over the Old Testament law and sacrifices. In Hebrews 10:30, the author quotes two Old Testament passages to remind readers of God’s justice and judgment.

The verse begins with “For we know him that hath said,” identifying God as the one who speaks. The author and the Hebrew readers know God not merely by creation and providence but by the Scriptures, which reveal His being, nature, and perfections, particularly that what He says He is able to perform. The first quotation, “Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense,” is from Deuteronomy 32:35, where Moses speaks of God’s righteous judgment upon those who oppose Him. The second quotation, “The Lord shall judge his people,” is from Deuteronomy 32:36, and it speaks of God’s judgment specifically on His own people.

The author uses these quotes to highlight that God is the ultimate judge who will bring justice and retribution. In the immediate context of Hebrews 10, the author warns readers about the serious consequences of abandoning faith in Christ and returning to the old system of animal sacrifices under the Mosaic law. They are reminded that God is the one who will execute judgment on His people, and it is not for them to take matters into their own hands. This verse serves as a solemn reminder that God is the ultimate judge who will repay and recompense, and that His judgment applies even to His people.

This verse reminds believers of God’s sovereignty and His role as the ultimate judge. It underscores the importance of remaining faithful to God and trusting in His justice, even in the face of difficulties and persecution. It also teaches believers to refrain from seeking personal vengeance and instead leave it in God’s hands.

Hebrews 10:30 encourages believers to hold on to their faith and trust in God’s ultimate justice, knowing that He will bring judgment on His own people and deal with every act of injustice in due time.
