Listen to this article

“Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.”

Context:Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith” or the “Faith Hall of Fame.” It highlights the faith of various Old Testament figures and their extraordinary acts of faith. The verse in question is part of a larger passage that describes the triumphs and victories achieved by people of faith.

Faith as the driving force:Throughout Hebrews 11, the author emphasizes the importance of faith. Faith is the foundational element that enables believers to live a life that pleases God and overcomes challenges. The individuals mentioned in Hebrews 11:33 were able to achieve remarkable feats because of their unwavering faith in God.

Subdued kingdoms:The people mentioned in Hebrews 11:33 exercised faith that empowered them to conquer nations and establish the rule of God. This refers to their ability to overcome powerful adversaries and establish God’s authority. Examples include Joshua leading the Israelites into the Promised Land and David’s victories over the enemies of Israel.

Wrought righteousness:The individuals mentioned in this verse also exhibited righteousness through their faith. Righteousness refers to their moral uprightness, adherence to God’s laws, and pursuit of justice. These faithful individuals acted in accordance with God’s will and were committed to living upright lives.

Obtained promises:God made specific promises to His people throughout the Old Testament, and those mentioned in Hebrews 11:33 believed and received those promises through their faith. For example, Abraham believed in God’s promise of a son and became the father of many nations.

Stopped the mouths of lions:This phrase likely refers to the story of Daniel, who was thrown into a den of lions but was miraculously protected by God. Daniel’s faith and unwavering trust in God allowed him to overcome this life‑threatening situation. It demonstrates that when people put their faith in God, even the most dangerous circumstances can be overcome.

Overall, Hebrews 11:33 highlights the incredible achievements of those who lived by faith. It encourages believers to trust in God and rely on Him to accomplish great things. This verse reminds us that with God, we can overcome challenges, receive His promises, and experience His miraculous intervention in our lives when we place our faith in Him.
