1 Peter 2:19
“For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.”
Context:The book of 1 Peter was written by the apostle Peter, addressing the Christian believers who were facing persecution and suffering for their faith. In this particular verse, Peter encourages believers to endure grief and suffering patiently, even when they are being treated unjustly.
Thankworthy behaviour:Peter begins by stating that it is commendable or praiseworthy (“thankworthy”) if someone endures suffering for conscience toward God. This means that when believers suffer wrongfully, if they maintain their integrity and commitment to God, their behaviour is worthy of gratitude and approval.
Conscience toward God:Peter emphasises the importance of having a clear conscience before God. This implies that believers should live in a way that is consistent with their faith and aligns with God’s moral standards. A person with a conscience toward God seeks to honour God in all aspects of life, even in the face of adversity.
Enduring grief:The verse acknowledges that believers may experience grief and suffering as a result of mistreatment or injustice. It could refer to various forms of suffering, such as persecution, ridicule, or oppression. However, Peter encourages believers to endure patiently rather than responding with bitterness or retaliation.
Suffering wrongfully:Peter specifically emphasises that the suffering mentioned in this verse is unjust or undeserved. It refers to situations where believers are mistreated for doing what is right or for their faith in Christ. Despite the unfair treatment, Peter urges believers not to compromise their commitment to God and to remain steadfast in their faith.
Application for believers:This verse serves as an encouragement for believers facing difficult circumstances. It reminds them that enduring suffering for the sake of their faith brings honour to God. It also encourages believers to maintain a clear conscience before God and not to be swayed by the unjust treatment they may encounter.
Overall, 1 Peter 2:19 teaches believers to endure suffering with a conscience toward God, knowing that their steadfastness brings honour to Him, even when they face unjust mistreatment. It calls for believers to remain faithful and rely on God’s strength and guidance during times of hardship.
