1 Peter 5:2

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

1 Peter 5:2 (KJV)

The apostle Peter wrote this letter to believers scattered throughout various regions because of persecution. In this passage, he addresses the elders or leaders of the church, instructing them on how to shepherd God’s people.

Peter begins by urging leaders to “feed the flock of God”—a shepherd’s image of providing spiritual nourishment, teaching, and guidance. The flock belongs to God, and the phrase “which is among you” points to the specific local congregation entrusted to their care.

Leaders are also to “take the oversight thereof,” exercising authority and responsibility to guide, protect, and lead the church according to God’s will and Word. This oversight is not to be done “by constraint”—under compulsion or reluctantly—but “willingly,” as God would have them serve. True shepherds lead with a heart of love and dedication, not merely out of duty.

Peter then warns against serving “for filthy lucre,” that is, dishonest gain or greed. Leaders must not exploit their position for personal financial benefit. Instead, they are to serve with a “ready mind,” eagerly and cheerfully, with a genuine desire to care for God’s people.

This verse calls church leaders to a higher standard of service. They are to shepherd willingly, without selfish ambition, and with humility. For believers, it highlights the importance of honouring and supporting their leaders, recognising the God-given role they fulfil in nurturing and teaching the congregation.

Ultimately, 1 Peter 5:2 reminds both leaders and members that the church is God’s flock, and all service is to be rendered for His glory, not for personal gain or compulsion.
