1 Peter 5:1
The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
1 Peter 5:1 (KJV)
Context
The apostle Peter wrote this letter to Christians scattered throughout various regions. In this verse, he directly addresses the elders—the spiritual leaders of the early Christian communities—and exhorts them. The surrounding verses (1 Peter 5:2-3) continue with instructions for elders to feed the flock of God willingly, not for shameful gain, and not as lords over God’s heritage but as examples. This verse sets the foundation for those instructions, grounding them in Peter’s authority and shared hope.
Meaning
Peter identifies himself as a fellow elder, not asserting authority over them but speaking as one of their own. He also calls himself a witness of the sufferings of Christ, referring to his personal experiences with Jesus, including the crucifixion. Additionally, he declares himself a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed, expressing assurance of future glory. Peter’s exhortation carries weight because of his office, his eyewitness testimony, his endurance for Christ, his experience of grace, and his full assurance of glory.
Biblical connections
Peter’s role as an elder and witness echoes the calling of spiritual leaders throughout Scripture to shepherd God’s people. His reference to future glory connects with the broader New Testament hope of eternal inheritance when Christ returns.
Elders have an important role in the Christian community and are called to provide guidance and care for the believers.
Leaders should lead by example and be able to relate to the experiences and sufferings of those they lead.
The present sufferings of believers should be viewed in light of the future glory and hope that awaits them in Christ.
Application
If you are an elder or a leader within your local church or community, remember the significance of your role and the responsibility to shepherd, guide, and care for those under your care. As a follower of Christ, seek to understand and relate to the sufferings of Jesus, knowing that they can deepen your faith and enable you to minister effectively to others who may be experiencing trials. Keep your focus on the future glory promised by God, understanding that the difficulties and challenges you face in the present are temporary compared to the eternal inheritance awaiting believers.
Reflection
Peter’s words remind us that faithful leadership is rooted in humility, personal experience of Christ, and hope in His coming glory. As we serve others, we can draw strength from the same assurance that sustained Peter.
