1 John 5:15
“And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”
Context:The book of 1 John was written by the apostle John to address various issues within the early Christian community. It emphasises the importance of love, fellowship, and the assurance of salvation. The passage we’re focusing on is found in the concluding chapter of the book, where John emphasises the confidence believers can have in their prayers.
Confidence in Prayer:The verse highlights the confidence believers can have in approaching God in prayer. It begins with the phrase “And if we know that he hear us,” which affirms the certainty that God hears the prayers of His children. As followers of Christ, we have the assurance that our petitions are not unheard by God.
Whatever We Ask:John then declares that “whatsoever we ask” of God, we can be assured that we will receive it. This statement is not to be taken in a way that suggests God grants every single request without discernment or in accordance with our own desires. Instead, it means that as we align our hearts with God’s will and pray according to His purposes, we can trust that our petitions will be answered.
The Desires of the Heart:John goes on to say that when we pray, we know that we already have the petitions we desired of God. This does not imply that our requests are instantly fulfilled, but rather it speaks to the confidence we have in God’s faithfulness to answer our prayers according to His perfect timing and wisdom. It is a statement of assurance and trust in God’s sovereignty.
Harmonising with God’s Will:It’s essential to note that this verse should be understood in the broader context of Scripture. Throughout the Bible, we are reminded that our prayers should align with God’s will (Matthew 6:10, James 4:3). As we grow in our relationship with God, our desires and requests become more aligned with His purposes, and our prayers are increasingly in harmony with His will.
Relationship and Faith:This verse also highlights the intimate relationship between believers and God. It reflects the loving Father‑child relationship we have with Him through faith in Jesus Christ. It reminds us that as we approach God with a sincere heart, trusting in His love and faithfulness, we can have confidence that He hears us and responds according to His wisdom and love.
