John begins with the phrase “And if we know that he hear us,” affirming the certainty that God hears the prayers of His children. This is not a doubtful condition but a confident assurance. The Greek construction reinforces the believer’s knowledge: we know that God hears us, and therefore we know that we have the petitions we desired of Him.
The phrase “whatsoever we ask” must be understood within the boundary set in the previous verse, 1 John 5:14: we ask “according to his will.” This is not a blank check for every request. Rather, it is a promise for those whose desires are aligned with God’s purposes. When our hearts are in harmony with God, we can ask in faith, knowing that our wishes are sanctified.
John’s statement that we “have the petitions” does not mean our requests are instantly fulfilled.
