“Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.”

Historical and Contextual Background:The Second Epistle of John is one of the smaller letters written by the apostle John to a specific audience, known as “the elect lady and her children” (2 John 1:1). While the identity of this recipient is not explicitly mentioned, it is commonly believed to refer to a particular Christian community or a metaphorical representation of the Church as a whole.

Key Themes:

  • Watchfulness:The verse emphasizes the need for personal vigilance and self‑examination. Believers are urged to “look to themselves,” indicating the importance of introspection and being mindful of their spiritual condition.
  • Preservation of Spiritual Progress:John expresses concern that the recipients do not lose the things they have accomplished or worked for. This suggests that they have made progress in their faith and spiritual walk, and John wants them to continue in that progress and not let it slip away.
  • Receiving a Full Reward:John encourages the believers to strive for a full reward. This implies that there are varying degrees of rewards in the Christian life, and the recipients should be diligent in their faith and obedience to receive the fullest reward possible.
  • Practical Applications:
  • Personal Examination:Believers should regularly evaluate their spiritual lives, assessing their beliefs, attitudes, and actions in light of God’s Word. Self‑reflection and introspection help identify areas of growth and areas that need improvement.
  • Perseverance:It is essential to maintain and build upon the progress made in one’s spiritual journey. This requires consistent commitment, obedience to God’s commands, and a reliance on His grace and strength.
  • Eternal Perspective:The verse highlights the concept of rewards in the Christian life. While salvation is a free gift, our actions and faithfulness to God can result in eternal rewards. Believers should focus not only on the present but also on the eternal perspective, striving to receive a full reward from God.
  • Accountability and Encouragement:Christians should support and encourage one another in their walk of faith. By looking out for one another and holding each other accountable, believers can help ensure that none of them lose what they have worked for.
  • Cross-References:
  • Matthew 16:27 (KJV):“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”
  • Hebrews 10:23-25 (KJV):
  • 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (KJV):
