Jude 1:11

Wo vnto them, for they haue gone in the way of Kain, and ranne greedily after the errour of Balaam, for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. Jude 1:11 (KJV)

The apostle Jude uses this vivid warning to expose false teachers who imitate the destructive paths of Cain, the greed‑driven error of Balaam, and the rebellious spirit of Korah. Their pursuit of personal gain leads them to pervert the gospel and ultimately brings ruin.

It is important to note that some lesson outlines have mistakenly linked Jude 1:11 to themes of Israel’s wilderness wanderings, covenant obedience, and nation‑building—subjects that belong to Exodus, Deuteronomy, and other Old Testament narratives. Jude’s epistle, however, addresses moral corruption among early Christians, not the historical journey of Israel in the desert.

Lesson 1 – Trusting God’s Provision: Even in a world filled with deceptive promises, believers are called to rely on God’s faithful provision. The verse reminds us that those who chase after selfish reward will perish, while those who trust God receive His sustaining grace.

Lesson 2 – Faith and Patience: Jude’s warning underscores the need for steadfast faith. As the false teachers rush after fleeting gain, the faithful are encouraged to be patient, remembering that God’s promises endure beyond momentary temptations.

Lesson 3 – Honoring God’s Covenant: The apostle exhorts the community to keep the covenant alive. Disobedience, like the greed of Balaam, leads to downfall; therefore, believers must honor their commitment to God’s word and live in covenantal fidelity.

Lesson 4 – Staying Faithful in a New Community: The early church, a new nation of believers, is urged to remain faithful to the gospel despite cultural pressures. By rejecting the corrupt counsel of false teachers, the community preserves its identity and reflects God’s kingdom values.

In sum, Jude 1:11 serves as a stark reminder that following the ways of Cain, Balaam, or Korah results in spiritual ruin. The faithful are called to trust God, exercise patience, uphold the covenant, and remain steadfast within the new community of believers.
