Jude 1:11
Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
Jude 1:11 (KJV)
Context
Jude writes to early Christians who face false teachers infiltrating their fellowship. His warning in this verse draws on three Old Testament examples to expose the character and fate of those who corrupt the faith.
Meaning
The “way of Cain” refers to a religion without faith, marked by jealousy and hatred of true righteousness, as seen in Genesis 4:1-16. Cain’s offering was rejected because his heart was not right, and his anger led to murder. Those who follow this path reject God’s way and harm others.
Balaam’s “error” was his greed. He knew God’s will but sought reward, teaching Balak how to cause Israel to sin for personal gain (Numbers 22; 31:16). Jude warns that false teachers similarly use religion for profit, leading others astray.
Korah’s “gainsaying” was his proud rebellion against God’s appointed leadership, resulting in his destruction (Numbers 16). Jude’s readers would recognize these examples as warnings: false teachers are marked by ungodly living, covetousness, and rebellion against divine authority, and they will face certain judgment.
Biblical connections
Jude’s epistle urges believers to “contend earnestly for the faith” (Jude 1:3) against such corrupting influences. The “woe” is both a denunciation of deserved punishment and a warning to the faithful to avoid these paths.
Application
Believers are called to trust God’s provision rather than chase selfish reward, to remain patient and steadfast in faith, and to honor their commitment to God’s word. By rejecting the corrupt counsel of false teachers, the community preserves its identity and reflects God’s kingdom values.
Reflection
Jude 1:11 serves as a stark reminder that following the ways of Cain, Balaam, or Korah results in spiritual ruin. The faithful are called to trust God, exercise patience, uphold the covenant, and remain steadfast within the new community of believers.
