Revelation 2:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:22

“And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.”

This verse is part of a message addressed to the church in Thyatira, one of the seven churches mentioned in the book of Revelation. In this particular section, the speaker is identified as Jesus Christ, who is addressing the angel or messenger of the church.

To understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to consider the context of the letter to the church in Thyatira. The church in Thyatira had commendable qualities, such as love, service, faith, and patience (Revelation 2:19). However, there was a woman in the church, referred to as “Jezebel,” who was promoting and teaching false doctrines and leading the people astray into sexual immorality and idolatry (Revelation 2:20).

In Revelation 2:21, Jesus declares that He had given Jezebel “space to repent of her fornication.” This statement reflects God’s patience and mercy. He had allowed Jezebel an opportunity to turn away from her sinful ways, to acknowledge her wrongdoings, and to repent.

However, the latter part of the verse reveals that Jezebel did not repent. Despite being given time to change her course and turn back to God, she refused to do so. This indicates her unyielding and unrepentant heart, which would result in consequences for her actions.

The verse serves as a warning about the consequences of persisting in unrepentant sin. It reveals God’s patience and desire for people to repent and turn away from sinful behavior. It also emphasizes the importance of genuine repentance, as it is an essential aspect of one’s relationship with God.
