Revelation 11:4

These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

Revelation 11:4 (KJV)

Revelation 11 presents a highly symbolic vision of two witnesses who prophesy during a period of trial. In verse 4, their identity is defined through Old Testament imagery.

The two witnesses are called “the two olive trees” and “the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.” This language comes from Zechariah 4, where the prophet sees a golden lampstand with two olive trees beside it (Zechariah 4:2-3). The olive trees supply oil to the lampstand, symbolizing a continual, abundant supply of the Holy Spirit’s anointing and empowerment. In Revelation, the two witnesses are lampstands giving light and olive trees supplying oil, indicating that their prophetic ministry is empowered and sustained by the Spirit of God.

The phrase “standing before the God of the earth” echoes Zechariah 4:14, where the two olive trees are “the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” In that original context, they referred to Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the governor, who were empowered by God’s Spirit to rebuild the temple. In Revelation, this position signifies that the witnesses are authorized servants in God’s presence, with a close relationship to Him and authority to carry out their mission.

The imagery of the olive trees and lampstand directly connects to Zechariah 4, where the two anointed ones stand by the Lord. The two witnesses are thus presented as Spirit-empowered prophetic figures whose standing before God guarantees the effectiveness of their witness. Their actions in the surrounding context—shutting heaven from rain, turning waters to blood, and striking the earth with plagues (Revelation 11:5-6)—are reminiscent of Elijah and Moses, though verse 4 itself focuses on their symbolic identity.

The identity of the two witnesses is debated among scholars. Some interpret them symbolically, representing the faithful Church throughout history, while others view them as two literal individuals who will appear during the end times. Approach this verse with caution and humility, recognizing its highly symbolic language.

For believers, this verse encourages reliance on the Holy Spirit’s anointing for witness. Just as the olive trees supplied oil to the lampstand, Christians are called to be filled with the Spirit so that their testimony shines in a dark world. The two witnesses stand before God, reminding us that effective witness begins with a life lived in God’s presence.

Consider how you, like the two witnesses, are called to stand before God and bear light in your surroundings. The same Spirit who empowered the prophets empowers you to be a faithful witness, not in your own strength but through divine anointing.
