Revelation 12:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:20

“And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

Context:The book of Revelation is the final book of the New Testament and provides a prophetic vision of the end times. It uses rich symbolism and imagery to depict the cosmic conflict between good and evil, the victory of Christ, and the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom.

The Great Dragon:The verse starts by referring to the great dragon. This dragon represents Satan, the Devil, and is associated with the serpent from the Garden of Eden. In this context, the dragon signifies the embodiment of evil and represents the opposition to God’s purposes.

The Fall of Satan:The verse mentions that the great dragon was cast out or expelled. This refers to a significant event that occurred in the spiritual realm. It points to a time when Satan and his angels were expelled from their position in heaven. The fall of Satan occurred before the creation of humanity and is often associated with his rebellion against God.

Deceiver of the Whole World:The verse states that Satan, the great dragon, is the one who deceiveth the whole world. This emphasizes Satan’s role as the ultimate deceiver who seeks to lead humanity astray from God’s truth. Satan uses various tactics such as lies, temptations, and false ideologies to deceive people and turn them away from God.

The Casting Out:The verse states that Satan was cast out into the earth along with his angels. This refers to a judgment or punishment that God imposed on Satan and his followers. While Satan was initially a heavenly being, this expulsion from heaven limited his scope of influence to the earth.

Overall, Revelation 12:9 highlights the existence of a cosmic conflict between good and evil, symbolized by the great dragon, Satan. It reveals Satan’s deceptive nature and his expulsion from heaven, emphasizing his role as the adversary of God and humanity. However, the book of Revelation also conveys the ultimate victory of Christ over Satan and the establishment of God’s kingdom, bringing hope to believers.
