And a mightie Angel tooke vp a stone like a great milstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great citie Babylon bee throwen downe, and shall bee found no more at all. Revelation 18:21 (KJV)

Revelation 18:21 is part of the description of the judgment and destruction of Babylon, which is symbolic of a corrupt and idolatrous city in the book of Revelation. To understand this verse better, it is helpful to look at the broader context of the passage. In Revelation 18 the angelic messenger announces the fall of Babylon and describes its destruction. This chapter portrays Babylon as a great and powerful city, associated with economic wealth, luxury, and immorality. It symbolizes a system or mindset that opposes God and seduces people away from Him.

The phrase “a mighty angel” signifies the power and authority of the divine messenger who proclaims the judgment of Babylon. The angel takes up “a stone like a great millstone” and throws it into the sea, emphasizing the forceful and irreversible nature of Babylon’s destruction. The image of a millstone, a large grinding stone used in ancient times, indicates the complete and utter annihilation of Babylon. The angel’s proclamation that the great city Babylon will be thrown down with violence and will be found no more at all underscores the finality and permanence of its destruction.

Symbolically, Babylon represents the world system that is opposed to God’s kingdom and characterized by idolatry, immorality, and rebellion against God. It can also be associated with the spiritual forces of evil that work to deceive and entice people away from God. Revelation 18:21 reminds believers of God’s ultimate judgment on the forces of evil and the assurance of His final victory. It serves as a warning against participating in the sinful ways of the world and encourages believers to remain faithful to God even in the face of opposition and persecution. Overall, the passage offers a powerful depiction of the irreversible destruction and judgment of Babylon, symbolizing the end of an evil world system, and it encourages believers to stand firm in the triumph of God’s righteousness.
