Revelation 18:21

And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

Revelation 18:21 (KJV)

Revelation 18:21 belongs to the larger vision of Babylon’s judgment. In this chapter, Babylon appears as a wealthy, luxurious city that leads nations into immorality and idolatry. The angelic announcement of its fall prepares for the dramatic sign that follows.

The “mighty angel” acts with divine authority, taking up “a stone like a great millstone” and casting it into the sea. A millstone was a heavy grinding stone, and its weight pictures the force and finality of Babylon’s destruction. Just as the stone sinks and disappears, so Babylon will be “thrown down” with violence and “found no more at all.” The repetition of this phrase underscores the complete and irreversible nature of God’s judgment.

This imagery directly echoes Jeremiah 51:63-64, where a stone is bound to a scroll and cast into the Euphrates as a sign of Babylon’s fall. In Revelation, the act is even more dramatic, as the angel throws the millstone into the sea, symbolizing the total removal of the corrupt world system. The surrounding verses (Revelation 18:22-24) list the cessation of music, crafts, light, and marriage, and the presence of the blood of prophets and saints, showing that Babylon’s judgment is both complete and just.

This verse warns believers against participating in the sinful ways of the world. Babylon represents any system or mindset that opposes God and seduces people away from Him. The certainty of its destruction encourages faithfulness even in the face of opposition or persecution. Believers can take comfort that God’s victory over evil is assured and that His judgment will be thorough.

The image of the millstone sinking into the sea invites reflection on the permanence of God’s justice. It reassures the faithful that evil will not last forever, and it calls each reader to examine where their loyalties lie. Standing firm in God’s righteousness is the only secure position when the world’s systems are finally swept away.
