Revelation 22:2
“In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
Context: The book of Revelation, written by the apostle John, is the last book of the New Testament and contains prophetic visions and messages. In Revelation 22, John receives a vision of the new heaven and the new earth, describing the eternal dwelling place of God and His redeemed people.
Symbolism of the Tree of Life: The tree of life is introduced in the beginning of the Bible in Genesis, where it is found in the Garden of Eden. It symbolizes eternal life and fellowship with God. In Revelation 22:2, the tree of life reappears, representing the restoration of what was lost in the Fall and the eternal blessings of God’s kingdom.
The Location: The verse mentions that the tree of life is situated “in the midst of the street of [the city],” referring to the new Jerusalem (described in Revelation 21). This indicates that the tree of life is at the center of the eternal city, emphasizing its significance and centrality in God’s kingdom.
Twelve Manner of Fruits: The tree of life is said to bear twelve different fruits. The number twelve often represents completeness and divine order throughout the Bible, as it is associated with the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. The twelve fruits may symbolize the abundant variety of blessings and provisions in God’s kingdom.
Monthly Yield: The verse states that the tree of life yields its fruit every month. This suggests a continuous and unending supply of nourishment and sustenance for God’s people in the new Jerusalem. It signifies that in eternity, there will be no lack or scarcity, but a perpetual abundance of blessings.
Healing of the Nations: The leaves of the tree of life are said to be for the healing of the nations. This suggests that in the new Jerusalem, there will be perfect healing and restoration, not only for individuals but also for nations. It signifies the complete reconciliation and unity of all people in God’s kingdom, where all divisions and conflicts will be eradicated.
Overall, Revelation 22:2 presents a beautiful picture of the eternal blessings, abundance, and healing that will be experienced in God’s kingdom. It assures believers of the restoration of fellowship with God and the fulfilment of His promises. It encourages us to eagerly anticipate the future hope of eternal life in the presence of God, where we will be abundantly blessed and perfectly healed.
