Exodus 28:1

Listen to this article

And take thou vnto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sonnes with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister vnto me in the Priests office, euen Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, Aarons sonnes. Exodus 28:1 (KJV)

The book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible and part of the Pentateuch (the Torah or Law), records Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery and their journey toward the Promised Land. Chapter 28 is a pivotal section that gives detailed instructions for the priesthood, especially the garments of the high priest. These sacred vestments were to be worn by Aaron, Moses’ brother, and his sons, who would serve as priests and mediators between God and the people of Israel.

God designated Aaron and his sons to serve as priests, a role that was crucial in the Israelite community. They were responsible for offering sacrifices, performing rituals, and interceding on behalf of the people before God. The priesthood symbolized the nation’s connection with the divine and emphasized the need for holiness and reverence in worship.

It is significant that God Himself appointed Aaron and his sons to this office. Their selection was not based on human choice or merit but on God’s sovereign will. This teaches that God calls and equips individuals for specific tasks in His service, urging us to recognize and embrace God’s calling in our own lives and to fulfill the purposes for which He has chosen us.

Aaron, the brother of Moses, played a central role in God’s plan for Israel’s deliverance. God chose him as high priest, and his sons—Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar—were also included in the priesthood. Scripture repeatedly shows God’s promises and blessings extending to families, and here He establishes a priestly lineage within Aaron’s household.

The primary purpose of the priests was to “minister unto me in the priest’s office.” Their ministry was directed toward God, requiring devotion, obedience, and reverence. This reminds believers to focus on God in service and worship, seeking His approval rather than human applause, and to honor Him alone.

For Christians, the New Testament declares that we belong to a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). Though we do not perform the same sacrificial duties as the Old Testament priests, we are called to offer spiritual sacrifices—prayer, worship, and holy living—and to represent God to the world. Like the priests of old, we should strive to live holy lives and act as ambassadors of God’s love and grace.

Exodus 28:1 underscores the divine appointment of Aaron and his sons to the priesthood and highlights the importance of serving God with reverence and devotion. As we reflect on this passage, may we recognize the privilege and responsibility of our own calling, and may we faithfully minister to God in every aspect of our lives.
