Exodus 28:3
And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
Exodus 28:3 (KJV)
Context
Exodus is the second book of the Old Testament. It tells how God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt and made them His covenant people. In chapter 28, God gives Moses detailed instructions about the priests who would serve Him. Aaron and his sons were chosen for this holy work. The verse focuses on the skilled workers who would make Aaron’s sacred garments. These garments were not ordinary clothing. They were part of the ceremony that set Aaron apart for service before God. God gave these instructions to Moses on the mountain, showing that worship and service must follow God’s design, not human preference.
Meaning
The phrase “wise hearted” describes people with special ability and understanding. In the Bible, this often refers to those whom God has gifted for skilled work. The verse says God Himself filled these workers with the spirit of wisdom. This means their skill came from God, not from human effort alone. The purpose of their work was to make Aaron’s garments for consecration. Consecration means setting someone apart for a holy purpose. Through these garments, Aaron was dedicated to serve as high priest and to minister before the Lord on behalf of Israel. The garments were essential for this role, not merely decorative. They enabled Aaron to stand before God in the priest’s office, a position of great responsibility and honor.
Biblical connections
The priestly garments gave Aaron dignity and honor, as God commanded in Exodus 28:2. The consecration process also included anointing and sanctifying Aaron and his sons (Exodus 28:41). This shows that God’s call to service includes both equipping and setting apart. The New Testament teaches that believers are called to be a royal priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:9). The principles of God-given skill, consecration, and service continue for God’s people today. The ultimate fulfillment of the priesthood is found in Christ, who is our great High Priest. Believers share in His priestly role, not through garments or rituals, but through faith in Him.
Application
God equips those He calls. He gives wisdom and skill for the work He assigns. Believers should recognize their talents as gifts from God and use them to honor Him and serve others. Consecration is not only for priests. Every believer is set apart for God’s service. This calls for dedication to His purposes in daily life. The craftsmen made the garments exactly as God commanded. This teaches that sacred service requires careful attention to God’s instructions. Work done for God should be done wholeheartedly and with excellence. When we serve in our families, churches, or workplaces, we can ask God to fill us with wisdom, just as He filled those ancient craftsmen. He is willing to give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5).
God’s gifting and empowerment: He fills His people with wisdom for His service.
Consecration and service: believers are called to be a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5).
Importance of skill and wisdom: abilities should be guided by godly wisdom.
Attention to sacred duties: approach spiritual duties with reverence and dedication.
Reflection
Exodus 28:3 shows that God values skill and wisdom in His service. He is the source of these gifts. The garments pointed to the high priest’s role, but they also point to Christ, our great High Priest. Through Him, believers share in a priestly role. As we serve God and others with the talents He has given, we should do so with wisdom, humility, and a heart consecrated to His purposes. Let us remember that every good gift comes from Him, and He delights to equip His people for the work He has prepared for them.
