Exodus 28:23
And thou shalt make upon the breastplate two rings of gold, and shalt put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate.
Exodus 28:23 (KJV)
Context
Exodus 28 records God’s precise instructions for the high priest’s garments. The breastplate was a square piece of woven fabric, about nine inches per side, worn over the ephod. It held twelve stones engraved with the names of Israel’s tribes. This verse commands two gold rings to be made and placed on the two upper ends of the breastplate. These rings were not ornamental; they served to fasten the breastplate securely to the ephod, preventing it from slipping while the priest ministered in the tabernacle.
Meaning
The gold rings reveal the care and exactness God required in worship. Nothing was left to human preference. The rings connected the breastplate to the ephod, binding the priest’s garments together. Gold throughout the tabernacle pointed to God’s divine and eternal nature. Here, the rings emphasize the holiness of the priestly office and the secure bond between the priest and his sacred duties. The following verses, Exodus 28:24-25, show that gold chains were attached to these rings, linking the breastplate to the shoulder pieces of the ephod. This detail distinguishes these upper rings from the lower ones mentioned in Exodus 28:26, which secured the breastplate to the ephod’s lower edge.
Biblical connections
The breastplate carried the names of Israel’s tribes close to the high priest’s heart, as he represented the whole community before God. This foreshadows Christ, our great High Priest, who presents His people before the Father. The New Testament also calls believers a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). Just as the rings held the breastplate in place, our union with Christ keeps us firm in our calling to represent God faithfully.
Application
This verse urges believers to take their priestly role seriously. We are to intercede for others, share the gospel, and demonstrate God’s love. The secure fastening of the breastplate reminds us that our relationship with God is dependable. We can approach Him with confidence, knowing we are held by Christ. The pure gold also calls us to pursue holiness, living lives set apart for God (1 Peter 1:16).
Reflection
Consider how carefully God designed every detail of worship. He values order, beauty, and connection. The two rings on the breastplate were small, yet they were essential. In the same way, small acts of obedience and faithfulness keep us securely joined to God’s purposes. Let this verse encourage you to honor God in the details of daily life, trusting that He sees and values every faithful step.
