Exodus 28:22

And thou shalt make vpon the brestplate chaines at the ends, of wreathen worke, of pure gold. Exodus 28:22 (KJV)

In Exodus 28, God instructs Moses on how to prepare the garments for Aaron, Moses’ brother, who would serve as the high priest. These garments had both symbolic and practical purposes, distinguishing the high priest and signifying his unique role as a mediator between God and the people.

The Breastplate: The breastplate was an essential part of the high priest’s attire, worn over the ephod, a sleeveless outer garment. It was a square piece of embroidered work of gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen, doubled to form a pouch‑like structure and called the “breastpiece of judgment.” Richly adorned with twelve precious gemstones, each represented one of the twelve tribes of Israel (Exodus 28:15‑21).

Chains and Their Function: Gold chains were made for the breastplate and bound to it at its corners or ends. These chains attached the breastplate to the ephod through rings, helping to keep the entire priestly garment securely in place.

Symbolic Significance: The breastplate symbolized the high priest’s role in carrying the nation of Israel before the Lord. The names of the twelve tribes were engraved on the gemstones, and whenever the high priest wore the breastplate, it signified his responsibility to intercede for and represent the people before God, bearing their burdens, needs, and sins as they approached the divine presence.

Application for Today: While believers are not high priests in the Old Testament sense, the concept of intercession and bearing one another’s burdens remains relevant. The New Testament encourages believers to pray for one another (James 5:16), bear each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), and act as mediators of reconciliation through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18‑20). The gold chains remind us of the importance of intercessory prayer and our call to stand in the gap for others, just as Jesus intercedes for us before the Father (Hebrews 7:25). They also highlight our responsibility as Christ’s ambassadors, representing His love, grace, and truth to the world.

Conclusion: Exodus 28:22 teaches about the beauty and significance of the breastplate of judgment and its gold chains. They point us to the vital role of intercessory prayer and the weight of representing God’s love and truth. May we seek to be faithful intercessors and ambassadors for Christ in our daily lives.
