Exodus 29:29
And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons’ after him, to be anointed therein, and to be consecrated in them.
Exodus 29:29 (KJV)
Context
God spoke these words to Moses as part of the instructions for consecrating Aaron and his sons as priests. The setting is the tabernacle worship system, which God established for Israel after the exodus from Egypt. Earlier in Exodus 29, God commanded the making of special holy garments for Aaron, the high priest. These garments were carefully designed and carried deep symbolic meaning. They set Aaron apart as God’s chosen go-between for the people of Israel.
Meaning
The verse says that Aaron’s holy garments shall pass to his sons after him. This shows that the priesthood was hereditary, passed down through Aaron’s descendants. The purpose of the garments was for the sons to be anointed and consecrated in them. Anointing with oil was a ritual that showed God’s choice and setting apart for sacred service. Consecration means being dedicated or made holy for God’s work. Through this ceremony, Aaron’s sons were officially ordained as priests and given authority to serve. The garments were not just clothing; they were part of the sacred ritual that made the priests fit to minister before the Lord.
Biblical connections
The immediate context in Exodus 29:30 notes that the son who succeeds as priest is to wear the garments for seven days during his consecration. This orderly transfer of priestly duties shows God’s care for the continuation of worship. The garments, described in Exodus 28, were to be used by successive generations, highlighting the enduring nature of God’s provision. This hereditary priesthood points forward to Jesus Christ, who is called the ultimate High Priest in the New Testament. Jesus offers Himself as the perfect sacrifice for sin and serves as the mediator between God and humanity. He fulfills and transcends the Levitical priesthood, providing a better hope for all who believe.
Application
For believers today, this verse teaches the importance of holiness and consecration when approaching God. Just as the priests were set apart for sacred service, Christians are called to live lives set apart for God. The passing of the garments from father to son also reminds us that God provides for the continuation of His work across generations. Each generation must be prepared and consecrated to serve the Lord faithfully. This truth encourages us to invest in the next generation, ensuring that they know God and are equipped for His service.
Reflection
Consider how God has set you apart for His purposes. The holy garments remind us that serving God is a sacred calling, not a casual task. As you read the detailed consecration ceremony in the following verses, notice the care and reverence involved. Let this encourage you to approach God with awe and to take seriously your own calling to be holy, just as He is holy.
