Exodus 35:6

Posted on 27 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair,”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, we find Moses assembling the congregation of Israel and giving them specific instructions regarding the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary where God’s presence would dwell among the people during their wilderness journey.

Verse 6 falls within a larger context where Moses is calling upon the people to contribute materials and resources for the construction of the tabernacle. The verse lists various materials that the people were required to donate for the construction of this sacred place.

Obedience and Willingness:The verse highlights the importance of obedience and willingness to contribute to the work of God. The materials listed were valuable and precious, and the people were expected to give them voluntarily and willingly from their own possessions. This teaches us the value of generosity and stewardship in supporting God’s work.

Symbolic significance of colors and materials:

  • Blue: Often associated with heaven, divine revelation, and God’s majesty. It signifies the heavenly nature of the tabernacle and points to God’s presence among His people.
  • Purple: Represents royalty and authority, symbolizing God’s kingly presence and rule over His people.
  • Scarlet: Symbolizes blood and sacrifice, foreshadowing the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who would come in the future to redeem humanity.
  • Fine linen: Represents purity and righteousness, reflecting the holiness and perfection of God.
  • Goats’ hair: This coarse material was used for the outer covering of the tabernacle, reminding us that God’s presence can be found even in humble and simple surroundings.

Unity and Diversity:The diverse materials listed in the verse also symbolize the unity of God’s people in their contribution towards a common goal. Despite their varied backgrounds and possessions, they were united in their commitment to building a place for God’s presence.

Foreshadowing Christ:The tabernacle itself, including the materials donated, foreshadows Jesus Christ, who would become the ultimate dwelling place of God among humanity (John 1:14). The various materials represent different aspects of Christ’s nature and ministry, emphasizing His divinity, kingship, sacrifice, righteousness, and humility.

Overall, Exodus 35:6 reminds us of the importance of offering ourselves and our resources willingly for God’s purposes, recognising His presence in all aspects of our lives, and finding unity in diversity as the body of Christ. It also points us to the ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ, who embodies all these symbolic elements as the Saviour and Lord of all.
