Exodus 35:21

Posted on 27 May 2025
Listen to this article

“And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the Lord’s offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.”

Context:The book of Exodus is the second book of the Bible and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, we find the Israelites in the wilderness after their escape from Egypt. God has instructed Moses to build the tabernacle, a portable sanctuary, where His presence would dwell among the people.

In Exodus 35, Moses gathers the people of Israel and calls upon them to contribute materials and resources for the construction of the tabernacle and its sacred items. The chapter emphasizes the importance of willing and voluntary offerings from the hearts of the people. It is in this context that Exodus 35:21 occurs.

Key Themes:

  • Voluntary Offerings:The verse highlights the voluntary nature of the offerings. It emphasizes that the people came forward willingly and with a heart stirred by God to contribute to the construction of the tabernacle. True worship and devotion to God come from a willing heart.
  • God’s Work:The verse also underscores that the offerings were not for personal gain but for the work of the Lord’s tabernacle and service. The people understood that their giving was for a higher purpose, and they willingly participated in advancing God’s work.
  • Spiritual Willingness:The verse mentions those whose spirits were made willing. This implies that their willingness to give was not just a matter of external action but also stemmed from an internal, spiritual prompting by the Holy Spirit.

Application:

  • Willing and Cheerful Giving:As believers today, we are encouraged to offer our time, talents, and resources to God’s work with a willing and cheerful heart. God desires our voluntary offerings, given out of love and devotion rather than obligation or compulsion.
  • Understanding God’s Work:We should recognize that our contributions, whether in church ministries, charitable causes, or helping others, are all part of God’s work. When we give with this perspective, even the smallest acts of kindness become significant in God’s eyes.
  • Listening to God’s Prompting:Like the Israelites, we need to be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives. When we allow the Spirit to guide us, we will find joy and fulfillment in being part of God’s plans and purposes.
  • Unity in Giving:Exodus 35:21 highlights the collective effort of the people in bringing their offerings. Similarly, as a community of believers, we can achieve great things when we unite in giving and serving together.

In conclusion, Exodus 35:21 teaches us about the beauty of willing and voluntary offerings for God’s work. It encourages us to give with a joyful heart, knowing that our contributions, no matter how big or small, are valuable when offered in obedience and devotion to God. Let this verse inspire us to be active participants in advancing God’s kingdom and serving others with love and compassion.
