Exodus 35:20

And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. Exodus 35:20 (KJV)

Exodus 35:20 is a relatively short verse that appears in the context of the instructions for building the tabernacle. To understand its significance, we need to look at the broader context of the chapter.

In the preceding chapters (Exodus 25‑31), God gave detailed instructions to Moses on how to construct the tabernacle, a portable dwelling place for His presence among the Israelites. The tabernacle was to be a sacred place where God would meet with His people and where they could worship Him.

Chapter 35 begins with Moses assembling the entire congregation of Israel and reiterating the commandments concerning the Sabbath (Exodus 35:1‑3). He then encourages the people to contribute willingly and generously to the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings (Exodus 35:4‑19), inviting offerings of gold, silver, bronze, fine fabrics, precious stones, and other materials.

Exodus 35:20 records the response of the children of Israel to Moses’ call for contributions. After Moses had addressed the people, the whole congregation left his presence and brought their offerings to the Lord, each man according to what he had. This action demonstrates several key lessons.

First, obedience is evident. The Israelites’ departure from Moses’ presence, coupled with their bringing of offerings, shows their willingness to obey God’s commands through Moses and to act promptly when called.

Second, there is a clear willingness to contribute. Their readiness to provide materials for the tabernacle reflects dedication to worship and a desire to have a dwelling place for God among them.

Third, unity is highlighted. The phrase “all the congregation” indicates that the entire community participated together, setting aside personal differences to pursue a common purpose.

Fourth, faith in God’s promise is apparent. Their enthusiastic contributions reveal trust in God’s plan and confidence in the significance of the tabernacle for their relationship with Him.

Application for today includes embracing obedience and swift action when God calls, offering our time, talents, and resources generously, fostering unity within the body of believers, and trusting God’s promises. By living out these principles, we honor God and actively participate in fulfilling His purposes.
