Genesis 1:22

Posted on 24 June 2023
Listen to this article

“And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.”

Context:Genesis 1:22 is part of the creation account found in the book of Genesis. It occurs on the fifth day of creation when God is creating the living creatures that dwell in the waters and the birds that fly in the sky.

Blessing:The verse begins with the statement, “And God blessed them.” God’s blessing is an act of divine favour, protection, and empowerment. In this case, God is bestowing His blessing upon the creatures He has just created.

Be Fruitful and Multiply:After blessing the creatures, God gives them a command: “Be fruitful, and multiply.” This command emphasises the reproductive nature of these creatures. God intends for them to reproduce and increase in number, filling the waters and the earth with their offspring.

Filling the Waters and the Earth:God’s directive to “fill the waters in the seas” pertains to the aquatic creatures, including fish and other sea creatures. These creatures are meant to populate and thrive in the vast expanses of water. Additionally, God commands the birds to “multiply in the earth.” This refers to the birds’ reproduction and their establishment across the land.

Stewardship and Design:This verse reveals God’s design for the natural world. He created living creatures to be fruitful and multiply, demonstrating His intention for life to propagate and flourish. It also highlights God’s provision for sustaining life by creating an abundance of creatures in different habitats, such as the seas and the land.

Life’s Intrinsic Value:This verse reminds us of the inherent value and purpose of all living creatures. God’s command to multiply and fill the waters and the earth shows that every creature has a vital role in His creation and contributes to the intricate balance of the natural world.

Application:

  • Appreciating Life’s Diversity:Genesis 1:22 teaches us to appreciate and value the diversity of life that God has created. We should respect and care for all living creatures, recognising their significance and role in the created order.
  • Nurturing Relationships:God’s command to be fruitful and multiply underscores the importance of healthy relationships and family units. It encourages us to prioritise the bonds we have with others and invest in nurturing and cultivating them.
  • Responsible Stewardship:As stewards of God’s creation, we should care for and responsibly manage the natural resources and the environment around us. This verse reminds us of our responsibility to protect and preserve the habitats and ecosystems that sustain life.

Overall, Genesis 1:22 emphasises God’s blessing, His command for living creatures to be fruitful and multiply, and His design for the diverse ecosystems of the world. It invites us to appreciate the beauty and complexity of God’s creation and reminds us of our role as caretakers of the natural world.
