Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

Genesis 1:20 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the creation account in Genesis, describing the fifth day when God made sea creatures and birds. The chapter shows God creating the world in an orderly sequence, preparing a place for life before filling it. The command comes from God alone, and His word carries full authority.

The phrase “And God said” stresses the power of God’s spoken word. His command alone brings life into existence. The waters are told to “bring forth abundantly,” showing the generous, full measure of creation. God does not create sparingly but with richness and variety. The abundance points to His goodness and His desire for life to flourish.

The “moving creature that hath life” includes all kinds of water animals, from small fish to great sea creatures. The “fowl that may fly above the earth” refers to birds that soar in the sky. The “open firmament of heaven” is the expanse of the air where birds move freely. Each creature has its proper place, showing God’s careful design and provision.

Later in Genesis 1, God blesses these creatures and tells them to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:22). That blessing shows His ongoing care and His desire for life to continue. The creation of life from water by God’s command also points to His complete authority over nature. The same God who spoke life into the waters continues to sustain all He has made.

This verse reminds us that God is the source of all life. He speaks, and life appears. We can trust His power and His provision, knowing that He who created the vast variety of creatures also cares for each one. Our own lives are held by the same Creator. Because He is faithful, we can rest in His care.

Consider the diversity of fish, birds, and other creatures. Each shows God’s wisdom and creativity. The abundance of life reflects His goodness. As we observe nature, we can praise God for His careful design and for the way He sustains what He has made. His creative work invites us to worship Him with awe and gratitude.
