In Genesis 13, Abram and his nephew Lot, along with their families and possessions, return from Egypt to the land of Canaan. Because their wealth had grown, the land could no longer support both of them, leading to disputes between their herdsmen. To prevent further conflict, Abram suggests they separate and generously offers Lot first choice of the land. Lot chooses the well-watered plain of Jordan and settles near Sodom, while Abram dwells in the land of Canaan.
This chapter not only illustrates Abram’s humility and his desire for peace but also sets the stage for future events. After Lot departs, God reassures Abram, promising to give him and his descendants all the land he can see in every direction. Abram then moves to Hebron and builds an altar to worship the Lord.
