Genesis 13:7

Listen to this article

And there was a strife betweene the heardmen of Abrams cattell, and the heardmen of Lots cattell: And the Canaanite, and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. Genesis 13:7 (KJV)

This verse is part of the narrative of Abram (later known as Abraham) and his nephew Lot. After both Abram and Lot accumulated substantial wealth, including livestock, conflicts arose between their respective herdsmen, setting the context for the tensions and disputes that followed. The passage also records that the Canaanites and the Perizzites dwelt in the land at that time. These groups were distinct indigenous peoples inhabiting Canaan, the region that would later become the Promised Land for the Israelites, and their presence highlights that Abram and Lot were not the only inhabitants of the area.

The episode offers a clear illustration of conflict among relatives. Even though Abram and Lot were family, their herdsmen became embroiled in strife, reminding us that disputes can arise even among close family members or among believers who share a common faith. The situation calls us to handle disagreements in a respectful, God‑honoring manner, seeking resolution with humility and wisdom.

The dispute was fundamentally about material possessions—specifically the cattle and wealth each man owned. This underscores the potential dangers of wealth and possessions, which can lead to division and contention. Believers are therefore urged to be mindful that material assets should not become a source of discord.

The verse’s mention of the Canaanites and Perizzites also points to the reality of co‑existence with non‑believers. Living among those who do not share our faith challenges us to be a light, living out our values in a way that reflects love and truth. In such contexts, our conduct can bear witness to God’s character.

Overall, Genesis 13:7 provides enduring lessons: handle conflicts with humility, guard against the divisive pull of material wealth, and live thoughtfully as believers amid a diverse world, shining forth God’s love to those around us.
