Genesis 5:16

And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:

Genesis 5:16 (KJV)

Genesis 5 traces the descendants of Adam through his son Seth. Each entry follows a fixed pattern: the age when a father had a key son, the years he lived afterward, and the mention of other sons and daughters. This verse focuses on Mahalaleel, the fifth patriarch in this line. His name means “praise of God.” The chapter emphasizes both the remarkable longevity of these early people and the reality that each one eventually died. This genealogy is not a mere list; it shows the growth of the human family and the fulfillment of God’s command to be fruitful and multiply.

After Mahalaleel became the father of Jared, he lived 830 more years and had other sons and daughters. The next verse gives his total lifespan as 895 years. The text does not name those other children, but it shows that his household continued to grow. This orderly record demonstrates God’s sustaining providence and the outworking of His creation blessing across generations. The mention of sons and daughters indicates the expansion of the human family, fulfilling the command given to Adam and Eve. Even in a chapter marked by death, God’s blessing of life and increase continues.

This same lineage appears in 1 Chronicles 1:3, Luke 3:37, and Jude 1:14, confirming its importance in Scripture. The line through Seth leads to Jesus Christ, the promised Redeemer. The steady continuation of this godly line shows that God remains faithful to His redemptive purpose despite human frailty.

Mahalaleel’s eight centuries of family life offer wisdom about lifelong faithfulness. Longevity was not given for idle comfort, but as an extended opportunity to honor God through daily responsibilities and the nurture of children. Believers today are encouraged to see the spiritual dignity of everyday callings and the lasting value of family discipleship. Walking faithfully before God requires persistent devotion in ordinary routines and a conscious effort to guide the next generation in truth. Each generation has a role in passing on the knowledge of God, and our daily faithfulness contributes to that larger purpose.

Even when daily labor seems routine and unnoticed by the world, steadfast obedience across a lifetime fulfills a vital role in God’s unfolding kingdom. The genealogical record is not merely a list of names; it is a testimony to God’s preserving power and the quiet, enduring faithfulness He values. God sees and honors the faithful lives of those who serve Him in the ordinary rhythms of life.
