Genesis 7:14
They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
Genesis 7:14 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 7:14 records the moment when the animals entered the ark with Noah and his family. God had commanded Noah to bring pairs of every kind of animal, both clean and unclean, so that they might survive the coming flood. This verse shows that command being carried out.
Meaning
The verse lists four groups of creatures: beasts, cattle, creeping things, and fowl. The repeated phrase “after his kind” shows that each animal came according to its own species and pattern of reproduction. This careful order reflects God’s design and His intention to preserve the diversity of life after the floodwaters receded.
The listing also shows Noah’s obedience. He did not choose which animals to bring or leave out. He followed God’s instructions exactly, trusting that the Lord knew what was needed.
Biblical connections
The categories in this verse match the command God gave in Genesis 6:20, where He told Noah to bring two of every sort into the ark. Noah’s action here fulfills that earlier instruction. The verse also stands in contrast to Genesis 7:21, where every living thing outside the ark perished. The preservation of these animals on the ark demonstrates God’s mercy even while He brought judgment on the earth.
Application
Noah’s example teaches us to obey God’s commands even when they seem difficult or beyond our understanding. He spent many years preparing the ark and gathering the animals, requiring patience, trust, and careful work. In our own lives, we can follow God’s instructions faithfully, knowing that His plans are good even when we cannot see the full picture.
This passage also reminds us of our responsibility to care for creation. God values the animals He made, and He preserved them through the flood. We are called to be good stewards of the world and its creatures, recognizing that they belong to God and deserve our respect and protection.
Reflection
Genesis 7:14 reveals God’s order, provision, and concern for all living things. He did not save only people but also the animals, showing His care for the whole creation. As we reflect on this verse, we can trust that God is faithful to preserve what He has made and that He calls us to join Him in caring for it.
