Genesis 6:20

Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

Genesis 6:20 (KJV)

Genesis 6:20 is part of God’s instructions to Noah before the flood. In the preceding verse, God commands Noah to bring two of every living thing into the ark, male and female, to keep them alive. This verse names the categories: birds, livestock, and creatures that move along the ground.

The phrase “after their kind” repeats three times, emphasizing order and distinction among species. This echoes the creation account, where God made creatures “after their kind” (Genesis 1:24-25). Each animal was to be preserved according to its own kind, showing that God established clear boundaries between different types of creatures.

The words “shall come unto thee” are significant. They indicate that God Himself would bring the animals to Noah. Noah did not have to hunt or gather them by his own effort. This shows divine initiative: God commands, and He also enables the fulfillment of that command.

The purpose “to keep them alive” reveals God’s care for all living creatures. This preservation is part of God’s covenant with Noah (Genesis 6:18) and His commitment to His creation. The ark itself serves as a means of salvation from judgment, prefiguring Christ as the ultimate refuge from the judgment of sin. Just as the ark preserved life, Jesus offers salvation and new life to all who trust in Him.

This verse encourages believers to trust in God’s provision. When God gives a task that seems overwhelming, He also provides the means to accomplish it. Noah obeyed faithfully, and God brought the animals to him. In the same way, believers can rely on God’s faithfulness to supply what is needed for obedience.

The orderly categorization of animals reminds us that God is a God of order, not confusion. It also shows that God values life and ensures its continuation, even amid judgment. This points to the restoration of creation, ultimately fulfilled in the new heavens and new earth.

Consider how God’s sovereign care extends to every part of His creation. The same God who preserved the animals through the flood is at work in your life, bringing about His purposes. Trust His plan, obey His commands, and rest in His provision.
