Genesis 12:17

Listen to this article

“And the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.”

This verse is part of the narrative in Genesis that describes the events that occurred when Abram (later known as Abraham) and his wife Sarai (later known as Sarah) travelled to Egypt during a time of famine.

In this passage, we see that Abram, fearing for his life because of Sarai’s beauty, asked her to say that she was his sister rather than his wife when they entered Egypt.

Upon their arrival, Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, was informed of Sarai’s beauty and took her into his household.

However, God did not approve of this situation.

As a result, the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues.

These plagues were likely a form of divine punishment to protect Sarai and ensure that she would not be defiled by Pharaoh.

Pharaoh eventually discovered the truth about Sarai’s relationship with Abram and released her back to him.
