Genesis 19:6

And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,

Genesis 19:6 (KJV)

Lot, Abraham’s nephew, had welcomed two visitors into his home. These visitors were angels sent by God to rescue Lot and his family from the coming judgment on Sodom. In the previous verses, the men of the city, young and old, surrounded the house and demanded that Lot bring out his guests so they could harm them. Lot went out to the door to face the mob, and he shut the door behind him.

Lot’s action shows the deep value of hospitality in that culture. A host was expected to protect his guests, and his house was a place of safety. By going out and closing the door, Lot placed himself between the danger and those inside. He also created a barrier, separating the evil outside from the safety of his home. This act gave him a chance to speak with the men and try to reason with them, as the next verse shows.

Lot’s choice to protect his guests stands in contrast to the wickedness of the city. His righteousness is seen in his care for the angels, even at great personal risk. Later, the angels pull Lot back inside and shut the door themselves, showing that God’s protection is stronger than any human effort. This event prepares the way for the angels’ rescue of Lot and his family.

This verse encourages believers to practice hospitality and to protect those who are vulnerable. It also reminds us that we must sometimes separate ourselves from sin and stand firm against pressure from others. Lot faced a hostile crowd, yet he chose to do what was right. In our own lives, we may need to make difficult choices to guard what is good and to honor God.

Lot’s door was a small but meaningful barrier. It could not stop the mob forever, but it gave time for God to act. We can trust that God sees our efforts to do good, even when they seem weak. He is able to protect and deliver in ways we cannot. Let us be faithful in small acts of courage, knowing that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.
