Genesis 21:2

Posted on 24 July 2023
Listen to this article

“For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.”

Context:Genesis 21 is a significant chapter in the book of Genesis as it marks the fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham and Sarah. The previous chapter, Genesis 20, tells the story of Abraham’s encounter with Abimelech, where he deceives Abimelech by saying Sarah is his sister instead of his wife. Despite Abraham’s lack of trust and questionable actions, God remains faithful to His promises.

The Promise:God had promised Abraham and Sarah a son in their old age. This promise was initially given in Genesis 15:4-5 and reiterated in Genesis 17:19, where God specifically mentions that Sarah will bear a son. At the time, both Abraham and Sarah were well advanced in years, and Sarah had been barren throughout her life.

Sarah’s Conception:Genesis 21:2 highlights the miraculous fulfilment of God’s promise. Sarah conceives and bears a son to Abraham, even though they were both well past the age of childbearing. This miraculous birth demonstrates God’s power to fulfil His promises, regardless of human limitations and impossibilities.

God’s Faithfulness:The phrase “at the set time of which God had spoken to him” emphasizes the precision and faithfulness of God’s timing. God had given Abraham a specific timeframe for the fulfilment of His promise. Despite the passing of many years and the doubts that may have arisen, God fulfils His promise precisely when He said He would. This underscores the reliability and trustworthiness of God’s word.

Lessons to Learn:God’s promises are certain:This verse reminds us that God’s promises never fail. Even when circumstances seem impossible, God is able to accomplish what He has spoken. God’s timing is perfect:God operates according to His own timeline, which may differ from our expectations. We need to trust in His perfect timing, knowing that He will fulfil His promises at the appointed time. God’s faithfulness outweighs human limitations:Despite Abraham and Sarah’s old age and Sarah’s infertility, God’s faithfulness prevails. Our limitations and weaknesses do not hinder God’s ability to bring about His plans.

Application:Trust in God’s promises:Like Abraham and Sarah, we should trust in God’s promises, even when they seem impossible or take longer than expected to be fulfilled. Wait patiently for God’s timing:It’s essential to wait patiently for God’s timing, knowing that He will fulfil His promises at the perfect moment. Impatience can lead to compromises and missed blessings. Embrace God’s faithfulness:Reflect on how God has been faithful in your life. Remember His past faithfulness to strengthen your faith in the present and future.

In summary, Genesis 21:2 is a powerful verse that highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It reminds us to trust in His promises, wait patiently for His timing, and embrace His faithfulness, even in seemingly impossible situations.
