Acts 1:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:42
Listen to this article

“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.”

Context:Acts 1:14 is situated in the early days of the Church, immediately after Jesus’ ascension to heaven. The disciples, along with some women and Jesus’ mother Mary, gathered together in an upper room in Jerusalem. They were awaiting the promised Holy Spirit and devoting themselves to prayer.

Unity and Fellowship:The phrase “all continued with one accord” highlights the unity and togetherness of the early believers. They were not scattered or isolated but came together in harmony, sharing a common purpose and devotion to God. This unity was essential for the early Church’s growth and effectiveness in fulfilling its mission.

Prayer and Supplication:The believers engaged in fervent prayer and supplication during this time. Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian life, allowing believers to communicate with God, seek His guidance, and express their needs and desires. Supplication refers to earnestly and humbly asking God for specific requests. The early believers recognized the importance of seeking God’s will through prayer and relying on His strength and provision.

Inclusion of Women:Acts 1:14 highlights the presence of women among the disciples. This demonstrates the inclusive nature of the early Church. In a society where women often held a marginalized status, Jesus and His followers affirmed the equal value and importance of women in God’s kingdom. This passage challenges cultural norms of the time and underscores the radical inclusivity of the Gospel.

Mary the Mother of Jesus:The mention of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in this verse reminds us of her unique role in salvation history. Mary had witnessed the birth, life, death, and resurrection of her son, Jesus Christ. Her presence among the disciples testifies to her faith and devotion, as well as the respect and honor accorded to her by the early Church. Mary serves as an example of faithfulness and trust in God’s plan.

Importance of Preparing for the Holy Spirit:Acts 1:14 sets the stage for the subsequent events in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit is poured out on the believers on the day of Pentecost. The disciples’ gathering, prayer, and unity were vital preparations for receiving the promised Holy Spirit’s empowering presence. Their obedience and readiness positioned them to be vessels through whom God could work mightily.

  • Unity in the Church:Acts 1:14 encourages believers today to pursue unity in the Church, setting aside differences and focusing on the common goal of serving and worshiping God together.
  • The Power of Prayer:This verse emphasizes the importance of regular and fervent prayer. It reminds us to make prayer a priority in our lives and seek God’s guidance, provision, and empowerment.
  • Inclusion and Equality:Acts 1:14 challenges us to value and respect all individuals, regardless of their gender, race, or social status. It reminds us that the Gospel is inclusive and calls us to embrace diversity within the Church.
