And they prayed, and said, Thou Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen, Acts 1:24 (KJV)

Context: Acts 1:24 takes place just after the ascension of Jesus and prior to the selection of Matthias to replace Judas Iscariot as one of the twelve apostles. The disciples, together with other believers, were gathered in Jerusalem, seeking guidance from God on who should fill the vacant apostolic position.

Prayer: The verse begins with the statement, “And they prayed.” The disciples understood the significance of seeking God’s will and direction through prayer. It is a reminder for us today to approach important decisions and tasks with prayer, acknowledging our dependence on God’s wisdom and guidance.

Recognition of God’s Omniscience: The disciples address God as “Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men.” Here they acknowledge that God is all‑knowing and has perfect insight into the thoughts and intentions of every individual. He can discern the true condition of the heart and make the right choice.

Seeking God’s Choice: The disciples request God to “shew whether of these two thou hast chosen.” They were faced with two potential candidates, Joseph called Barsabas (surnamed Justus) and Matthias. Instead of deciding on their own preferences or human reasoning, they sought God’s guidance and asked Him to reveal His choice, showing the importance of aligning decisions with God’s will.

Trusting in God’s Decision: Their prayer demonstrates trust in God’s sovereignty. They did not attempt to manipulate the situation or impose their own preferences but submitted to God’s decision, recognizing that only He knows what is best for His purposes.

Application: Acts 1:24 teaches several valuable lessons. First, it highlights the importance of prayer in seeking God’s guidance and direction; we should bring our decisions, concerns, and desires before Him, trusting in His wisdom. Second, it reminds us of God’s omniscience—He knows the depths of our hearts, and we can rely on Him to make the right choices. Third, it emphasizes aligning our decisions with God’s will rather than relying solely on human reasoning or personal preferences. Acts 1:24 sets an example for us to follow in seeking God’s will, trusting in His wisdom, and making decisions that align with His purposes.
