Acts 1:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:42
Listen to this article

“And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.”

Context:Acts 1:7 is part of the conversation between Jesus and His disciples just before His ascension into heaven. Jesus had been speaking to them about the kingdom of God and had given them the command to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:3-5).

Humility and Trust:In this verse, Jesus responds to a question from His disciples regarding the restoration of the kingdom to Israel. His answer reminds them of the limitation of their knowledge. Jesus explains that it is not for them to know the specific times or seasons when God will bring about the fulfillment of His purposes. This teaches us the importance of humility and trust in God’s sovereignty.

Divine Authority:Jesus emphasizes that the knowledge of specific times and seasons is within the Father’s authority. God has complete control over the timing of events and the fulfillment of His plans. This highlights the divine sovereignty and wisdom of God, as He alone determines the course of history and the unfolding of His purposes.

Focus on the Present:By directing the disciples’ attention away from speculating about future events, Jesus encourages them to focus on their immediate mission. He tells them in Acts 1:8 that they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, and they will be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. This teaches us the importance of being faithful to our present calling and fulfilling our mission as followers of Christ.

Application:Acts 1:7 reminds us that it is not our role to know all the details of God’s timing and plans. Instead, we are called to trust in His wisdom and sovereign control over all things. Rather than being preoccupied with the future or trying to figure out the specifics of God’s timing, we should focus on seeking His will for our lives and being obedient to the tasks He has given us in the present.
