Acts 10:42

And he commanded vs to preach vnto the people, and to testifie that it is he which was ordeined of God to be the Iudge of quicke and dead. Acts 10:42 (KJV)

Acts 10 records the conversion of Cornelius, a Roman centurion, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Gentiles. Prior to this event the message of salvation through Jesus Christ had been preached mainly to the Jews. God revealed to Peter through a vision that the Gentiles were also to receive the Gospel, and Peter went to Cornelius’ house to share the good news. In verse 42 Peter summarizes his proclamation and stresses the authority and role of Jesus as the appointed Judge.

The verse begins with Peter stating that Jesus “commanded us to preach unto the people.” This echoes the Great Commission given by Jesus before His ascension (Matthew 28:19‑20), in which He instructed His disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that He had commanded. The command applies to all believers, not only the early disciples, and highlights the importance of sharing the Gospel with every people group.

Peter then says they were commanded “to testify that it is he which was ordained of God.” Believers are therefore called not only to proclaim the Gospel but also to bear witness to Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and His role as Savior and Lord. Our testimony should reflect our personal encounter with Him and the transformative power of His grace in our lives.

The verse concludes that Jesus was ordained (or appointed) by God “to be the Judge of the living and the dead” (quick and dead). This points to the ultimate authority Jesus holds over all humanity. The reality of judgment, as reminded in 2 Corinthians 5:10, gives believers comfort that the righteous Judge is both just and merciful.

Key lessons from this passage are: we are commanded to share the Gospel and testify about Jesus; our testimony should be rooted in personal experience of His grace; and Jesus is not only the Savior but also the appointed Judge, a truth that should motivate us to live in a way that honors Him.

Application follows naturally.

Actively seek opportunities for evangelism, praying for boldness and the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Let your life be a living testimony of Christ’s power and grace, displaying Christ‑like character in word and deed. Keep the reality of the final judgment before you, allowing it to inspire urgency and a life that pleases Him. May this study deepen your understanding of Acts 10:42 and encourage you to fulfill the Great Commission in your own context.
