Acts 11:17

Listen to this article

“Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the book of Acts that describes the conversion of the Gentiles, specifically the conversion of Cornelius and his household. In this passage, Peter is explaining to the Jewish believers in Jerusalem how the Holy Spirit fell upon the Gentiles who received the message of the gospel.

Here are some key points to consider in this verse:

God’s gift to the Gentiles:Peter emphasises that God gave the Gentiles the same gift as He gave to the Jewish believers. This gift refers to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It demonstrates that salvation and the reception of the Holy Spirit are not limited to a particular ethnic or religious group but are available to all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Belief in the Lord Jesus Christ:Peter highlights the importance of faith in Jesus Christ. Those who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, regardless of their background, were recipients of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence. This underscores the essential role of faith in Christ as the means of salvation and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Peter’s recognition of God’s work:Peter acknowledges the sovereignty of God in this verse. He humbly asks, “What was I, that I could withstand God?” This statement shows Peter’s realisation that he had no right to oppose or question God’s decision to extend salvation to the Gentiles. He recognised that it was God’s plan and that his role was to be obedient and proclaim the gospel message.

Overall, Acts 11:17 highlights the inclusiveness of God’s salvation plan, which includes people from all nations who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. It challenges any notion of exclusivity or favouritism based on ethnicity or religious background. It also reminds believers of the importance of recognising and submitting to God’s sovereign work in bringing salvation to all who believe.

As with any Bible study, it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and consider the broader context to gain a deeper understanding of the passage and its significance.
