Acts 12:25

Posted on 18 May at 11:42
Listen to this article

“And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.”

Context:Acts 12:25 is found towards the end of Acts 12, which describes the events surrounding the persecution of the early church and the miraculous escape of Peter from prison. In this verse, we see Barnabas, Saul (later known as the Apostle Paul), and John Mark returning from Jerusalem after completing their ministry there.

Barnabas and Saul:Barnabas and Saul (Paul) were prominent figures in the early church. Barnabas, whose name means “son of encouragement,” was known for his generosity and support of fellow believers. Saul, previously a persecutor of the church, experienced a dramatic conversion and became one of the most influential apostles, spreading the Gospel throughout the Roman Empire.

John Mark:The verse mentions John, whose surname was Mark. John Mark is believed to be the author of the Gospel of Mark. He was a cousin of Barnabas and accompanied Barnabas and Saul on their first missionary journey (Acts 13:5). However, during the journey, John Mark left them and returned to Jerusalem (Acts 13:13). This later caused a dispute between Paul and Barnabas when they were planning their second journey (Acts 15:36-39).

Fulfilling their ministry:The verse states that Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem after fulfilling their ministry. This indicates that they completed the work they were called to do in Jerusalem, which likely involved teaching, preaching, and establishing the early church. The ministry of Barnabas and Saul was characterised by their commitment to spreading the Gospel and strengthening believers.

The significance of the verse:Acts 12:25 highlights the importance of fulfilling one’s ministry and remaining faithful to the work God has called us to do. It also emphasises the partnership and collaboration between believers in advancing the Kingdom of God. Despite the challenges and disagreements they faced, Barnabas, Saul, and John Mark continued to serve God and contribute to the growth of the early church.

  • We should strive to fulfil the ministry God has entrusted to us, using our gifts and talents for His glory.
  • Collaboration and unity among believers are essential for effective ministry and advancing the Gospel.
  • Even when disagreements arise, we should seek reconciliation and continue to serve God’s purposes.
  • Just as John Mark had a second chance to redeem himself and became a valuable servant of God, we should be willing to extend grace and second chances to others.

Remember, when studying the Bible, it’s helpful to read the surrounding verses and consider the broader context to gain a more comprehensive understanding.
