Acts 12:8

And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

The angel’s command to “gird thyself” refers to Peter’s inner garment, which he slept in loose about him; the angel bids him to gird it up with his girdle to prepare to walk out. The “sandals” were a sort of shoe that covered only the soles of the feet and were fastened to the leg with strings. The command to “cast thy garment about thee” refers to his outer cloak or mantle, which he was to wrap around himself. These instructions were not to leave Peter half-dressed but to prepare him fully for the journey ahead. This detailed preparation shows that even in a miraculous deliverance, God works through ordinary, practical steps of obedience.

Peter’s immediate obedience is noteworthy. He did not ask any question or dispute the matter, but at once complied. This act of obedience reflects Peter’s trust in the angel and his faith in God’s intervention. The narrative continues in verse 9, where Peter went out and followed the angel, not knowing it was true, but thinking he saw a vision.
