Acts 13:8

But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turne away the deputy from the faith. Acts 13:8 (KJV)

Acts 13 records the first missionary journey of the Apostle Paul and Barnabas. They were sent out by the Holy Spirit from the church in Antioch to proclaim the Gospel to various regions. While preaching to the deputy (or proconsul) Sergius Paulus in Paphos, they encountered a sorcerer named Elymas, also called Bar‑Jesus.

Elymas, whose name means “wise” or “magician,” was a Jewish false prophet and sorcerer who served as an attendant of the Roman official Sergius Paulus. He opposed Paul and Barnabas, seeking to hinder the deputy from accepting the faith.

His resistance symbolizes the spiritual opposition that the Gospel continually meets. Throughout Scripture we see individuals who oppose God’s work, promote false teachings, magical arts, and deceptive practices that divert people from the truth.

Acts 13:8 therefore depicts the clash between the power of God and the forces of darkness. Elymas’ actions reveal the ongoing battle between righteousness and deception, truth and lies, light and darkness, illustrating the spiritual warfare believers may encounter when sharing the Gospel.

In the following verses (Acts 13:9‑12) Paul confronts Elymas and pronounces a temporary blindness upon him. This divine intervention demonstrates God’s sovereignty and power over evil, showing that no opposition can ultimately prevail against the purpose and proclamation of the Gospel.

Despite Elymas’ resistance, the deputy Sergius Paulus witnessed the confrontation, was deeply impressed by God’s power, and believed in the teachings of the Lord (Acts 13:12). His conversion signifies the triumph of God’s Word over the obstacles of the enemy.

Acts 13:8 encourages believers to persevere in the face of spiritual opposition. It reminds us that the proclamation of the Gospel may encounter resistance, but we should not be discouraged. Instead, we are to rely on God’s power, confront falsehood, and continue to share the truth in love, trusting in the sovereignty of God to overcome all hindrances.
