Acts 14:15

Listen to this article

“And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:”

In this verse, the apostle Paul and Barnabas were addressing a crowd in Lystra after performing a miracle. The people of Lystra were so amazed by the miracle that they began to worship Paul and Barnabas as gods.

In response, Paul and Barnabas immediately rejected this worship and proclaimed themselves as mere men with similar weaknesses and limitations as the Lystrans. They emphasized that they were not divine or worthy of worship. Instead, they preached to the people, urging them to turn away from their vain idolatry and direct their devotion towards the one true living God.

This verse offers several important insights:

Recognition of Human Limitations:Paul and Barnabas acknowledged their humanity and emphasized that they were ordinary individuals with human weaknesses and emotions. They wanted to make it clear that they were not divine beings, deserving of worship or adoration. This humility is a characteristic of true servants of God, as they recognize their dependence on Him.

Contrast between Vanities and the Living God:The apostles highlighted the contrast between the “vanities” or idols that the Lystrans worshiped and the living God whom they preached about. Idols are lifeless and powerless, representing false gods. In contrast, the living God is the Creator of heaven, earth, the sea, and everything in existence. This proclamation emphasizes the uniqueness, power, and sovereignty of the true God.

Call to Repentance:Paul and Barnabas urged the people to turn away from their idolatry and towards the living God. They recognized the people’s misplaced worship and sought to redirect it to the one who deserved it. This call to repentance highlights the importance of recognizing and forsaking false gods or idols and turning to the true God in faith and devotion.

Overall, Acts 14:15 demonstrates the humility of the apostles in rejecting worship and redirecting people’s focus toward the true God. It also emphasizes the importance of turning away from false gods and idols and embracing the living God, who is the Creator and sustainer of all things.
